An independent and impartial Election Observation Mission (EOM) to the Isle of Man has released its first findings. The findings come just hours after the close of polls and the announcement of results.

The findings are based on research carried out by a team of Election Observers over the last 10 days. They held conversations and interviews with a wide range of stakeholders and visited the vast majority of polling stations across the Isle of Man throughout Election Day.

The Mission found the election to be professional and transparent, and the election process was conducted in accordance with Isle of Man laws, international standards and within the relevant legal deadlines. It highlighted the cooperation between the Crown and Elections Office, the Captains of the Parishes, candidates, Deputy Returning Officers and polling staff.

The Mission noted that a record 82 candidates stood for election giving voters a choice of candidates and views. The Crown and Elections Office were praised for the guidance and support they gave candidates. Additionally, the hard work of Deputy Returning Officers was recognised. The Mission heard that there has been some difficulty in recruiting for the Deputy Returning Officer roles suggesting further consideration is given to this for future elections.

New elements were introduced for this election. This year, voters could use any polling station in their constituency rather than just one, and iPads containing electronic lists of electors were part of the tool-kit given to polling staff. The Mission regarded this as positive.

A Preliminary Statement containing more on the Mission’s initial findings will be available in the week of Monday 28^th September. This will be followed by a more detailed final report which will be released soon after. It will contain more analysis and will be made public.
