Québec Minister in UK Parliament to Strengthen UK Canada Relations

Wednesday 29 November 2017

Madame Christine St-Pierre, Québec Minister of International Relations and Francophonie, met with UK MPs to discuss the future of the UK’s relationship with Canada and Québec on Wednesday 29 November.

The Commonwealth Parliamentary Association UK (CPA UK) facilitated meetings that covered trade, culture and academic cooperation, and provided the Minister of International Relations and Francophonie an insight into how the UK Parliament is preparing for the UK’s departure from the European Union.

The discussions also included the future of the EU-Canada Comprehensive Economic Trade Agreement (CETA), Québec’s role in CETA negotiations, and the importance of free trade. In a meeting with Andrew Percy MP, the UK Trade Envoy to Canada, they explored potential areas for future cooperation between Québec and the UK.

The Minister took the opportunity to present a paper, Policy on Québec Affirmation and Canadian Relations, which was published on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the Canadian Federation and outlines the Québec Government’s vision for Québec within Canada.

As part of the visit, the Minister and her delegation also attended Prime Minister’s Questions, the highlight of the political week in Westminster. The Minister was accompanied by Mr John Anthony Coleman, who has recently been appointed as Agent-General for Québec in London.
